The Refugee, Illuminated

A Karagöz Shadow Puppet Exhibition and Publication

The Refugee, Illuminated is a multimedia traveling exhibition of Armenian Genocide survivor Abkar Knadjian’s Karagöz shadow puppet collection of 180 puppets found in Aleppo during the Syrian war, in addition to a publication of the same. Karagöz shadow puppetry is an ancient shamanistic art form designated by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage and emblematic of multicultural co-existence.

The collection of puppets at the heart of this exhibition are refugees themselves, having survived the Armenian Genocide over a century ago and the Syrian war today. The Refugee, Illuminated exhibition and publication will contain contributions by various renowned Karagöz experts, scholars as well as thought leaders and luminaries in the world who have reframed their own stories of trauma and pain into resilience and leadership. The exhibition seeks to reframe the refugee experience and perception of refugees in the world from one of disenfranchisement to one of value and power. To maintain the authenticity of the art form and aid in heritage preservation, the book will be presented in English, Western Armenian, Arabic and Turkish.

The Project is currently in development.
